할리우드의 두 아시아계 레전드, 배우 안나 메이 왕(Anna May Wong)과 이소룡(Bruce Lee)을 주제로 한 대담 'Two Dragons in Hollywood: Bruce Lee, Anna May Wong'이 브루클린하이츠의 브루클린역사협회(Center of Brooklyn History)에서 열린다. 

 

대담자는 이소룡 전기 'Water Mirror Echo: Bruce Lee and the Making of Asian America'의 작가 제프 장(Jeff Chang)과 안나 메이 왕의 전기 'Not Your China Doll: The Wild and Shimmering Life of Anna May Wong'의 작가 케이티 지(Katie Gee). 이들은 할리우드 황금기에서 무술영화의 탄생, 그리고 아시안아메리칸 시대까지 이들의 유산, 장벽, 그리고 영향력을 논의할 예정이다. 

 

 

이소룡(李小龍, 리샤오룽, Bruce Lee, 1940-1973)의 본명은 이진번(李振藩), 1940년 샌프란시스코 차이나타운 병원에서 태어났다. 중국인 아버지 이해천(李海泉)은 경극 배우, 어머니 그레이스 호(何愛瑜, 하애유)는 중국인과 독일계 백인의 혼혈인이다. 생후 3개월 가족이 홍콩으로 이주, 이때 홍콩영화 '금문녀'에 출연했으며 18세까지 20여편의 영화에 출연했다.  

 

어려서 몸이 약했던 이소룡은 홍콩에서 무용 교사 엽문에게 영춘권, 권투, 펜싱 등을, 한국인 태권도 사범 이준구에게 발차기를 배우 절권도를 수련한다. 1959년 엽문의 추천으로 격투기대회 출전했다. 아역배우로 활동하면서 춤 솜씨가 좋아 댄스대회에도 참가했으나, 학교에선 불량배들과 싸웠다. 1959년 패싸움에 말려든 후 부모의 권유로 단돈 100달러를 들고 샌프란시스코로 돌아갔다. 시애틀의 워싱턴대학교에서 연극을 전공하며 철학, 연극, 심리학책을 독파했다. 

 

1968년 미국의 TV 시리즈 '그린 호넷'에 주인공 탐정의 운전수 역을 비롯 몇편의 TV 드라마에 주연이 아닌 조연으로 출연하면서 실망한 이소룡은 1971년 홍콩으로 돌아가 골든하베스트의 '당산대형'에서 주연을 맡아 흥행에 성공을 거두며 스타가 된다.  이후 '정무문'과 '맹룡과강'에 연출까지 맡으며 실력을 인정받는다. 1973년 골든하베스트-워너브라더스 합작의 '용쟁호투'에 출연하며 세계적인 스타가 된다. 

 

1973년 7월 20일 '용쟁호투' 개봉 3주 전 이소룡은 홍콩에서 갑자기 사망한다. 그날 이소룡은 골든하베스트의 제작자 레이먼드 초우와 만나 '사망유희' 제작을 논의했고,  007 영화의 스타였던 조지 레전비와 저녁식사 예정이었다. 그 사이에 두통으로 진통제를 먹고 잠든 이소룡은 영원히 일어나지 못하게 된다. 그의 나이 33세였다. 그의 사인에 대해서는 의견이 분분하다. 장례식에서 스티브 맥퀸과 척 노리스가 운구를 운반했다.

 

이소룡이 시나리오를 쓰고 연출할 계획이었던 '사망유희'는 40분 촬영분이 남아 로버트 클루스의 연출로 대역을 써 완성된다. 쿵후제자였던 대학동문 린다 에머리와 결혼, 아들 브랜던 리(이국호,1965-1993)와 딸 이향응(1969-)을 두었다. 브랜던 리는 1993년 영화 '크로우' 촬영 중 사고로 사망했다. 

 

 

안나 메이 왕(Anna May Wong, 黃柳霜, 1905-1961)은 할리우드의 첫 차이니즈-아메리칸 스타다. 무성영화 시대 패셔니스타로도 인기를 끌었던 안나 메이 왕은 1935년 MGM이 펄 벅의 '대지(The Good Earth)'의 중국인 오란 역으로 자신 대신 미국인 배우 루이즈 라이너를 선택하자 상심한 것으로 알려졌다. 

 

왕은 더글러스 페어뱅크스과 공연한 '바그다드의 도적(The Thief of Bagdad, 1924)' '피카딜리(Piccadilly, 1929)' 마를레네 디트리히과 공연한 '상하이 익스프레스(Shanghai Express, 1932)'로 강인한 이미지를 남겼다.  뉴욕의 홍윤아(yunah Hong) 감독이 안나 메이 왕의 삶을 다룬 다큐멘터리 'Anna May Wong: In Her Own Words'(2010)를 연출했다.

Join acclaimed biographers Jeff Chang (Water Mirror Echo: Bruce Lee and the Making of Asian America) and Katie Gee Salisbury (Not Your China Doll: The Wild and Shimmering Life of Anna May Wong) for a timely and powerful conversation about two iconic trailblazers who redefined what it meant to be Asian American in the reels and in real life. 

 

From Hollywood’s golden age to the birth of martial arts cinema and into the age of Asian America, Anna May Wong and Bruce Lee fought to claim their stories—and helped shape the ongoing struggle for visibility, pride, and power in popular culture. Together Chang and Gee Salisbury explore the legacy of these stars, the barriers they broke, and how their influence still reverberates in today’s Asian American “renaissance.”

 

This program is offered in partnership with the Asian American Arts Alliance and the Sunset Park Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library. 

 

 

Participants 

 

Jeff Chang is a writer, podcaster, and a cultural organizer. His newest book is Water Mirror Echo: Bruce Lee and the Making of Asian America, released in September 2025. His book, Can't Stop Won't Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation, was named one of the best U.S. nonfiction books of the last quarter century. He has also written Who We Be: A Cultural History of Race in Post Civil Rights America, and We Gon' Be Alright: Notes On Race and Resegregation. He was a Lucas Artist Fellow and has received the American Book Award, the Asian American Literary Award, and the USA Ford Fellowship in Literature. He is the host of the Signal award-winning podcast, Edge of Reason, and of Notes From the Edge, produced by KALW Public Media.

Katie Gee Salisbury is the author of Not Your China Doll, a new biography of Anna May Wong, the first Asian American movie star. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, Vanity Fair, The Believer, the Asian American Writers' Workshop, and elsewhere. She was a finalist for the Jerome Hill Artist Fellowship in 2021 and gave the TED Talk “As American as Chop Suey.” She also writes the newsletter Half-Caste Woman.
