PAINTING WITH LIGHT: TRIBUTE TO VITTORIO STORARO

In March 2017, the George Eastman Award for distinguished contribution to the art of film will be presented to Italian cinematographer Vittorio Storaro. Not only one of the world’s most respected cinematographers of both the 20th and 21st centuries, Storaro is also a veritable “painter with light.” His unmatched technical prowess is imbued with original, deeply philosophical and highly personal reflections on how various shapes and colors psychologically affect our perception. A mere glance at his credits should be enough to convince anyone of the tremendous impact Storaro’s work has had on the advancement of visual arts. He worked with some of the most celebrated film directors (Bernardo Bertolucci, Francis Ford Coppola, Warren Beatty, Carlos Saura, Woody Allen) to create some of the most visually stunning pictures of all time, including such masterpieces as Last Tango in Paris and Apocalypse Now. The George Eastman Museum is certainly not the first to recognize Storaro’s unique talent; among numerous other awards—including three Academy Awards—Storaro was named one of history’s eleven most influential cinematographers by the respected International Cinematographers Guild. With this honor, he is placed in the “front ranks of a new wave of filmmakers who transformed the art form beginning in the 1950s” (and the only one still surviving today).
