뉴욕과 뉴저지를 중심으로 활동하고 있는 권종현 작가의 12번째 개인전이 3월 18일~ 4월 1일까지 뉴저지 헤켄섹에 있는 리버사이드 갤러리에서 열린다.
작가가 만들어내는 오색 빛의 마을엔 때로 눈이 내린다. 별이 숨어있는 마을에 흰 가루가 흩날리고 반짝이는 불빛이 지나간 자리에
푸른 나무들이 생기를 잃지 않는 모습은 아련한 크리스마스 분위기를 선사하고 있다. 쓸모없는 재료를 사용하여 재료의 해석 가능성을 훨씬 크게 한 것도 상상의 크기를 더하는 요소일 것이다. 따라서 거기서는 어떤 제한도 없는 시선의 자유를 누리는 것이 가능하다.
그림의 색과 자연의 빛, 권종현은 그 모두의 가능성을 작품으로 끌어들였다. 그 작품은 꿈을 꾼다. 마을을 만든다. 그리고 그 속에 우리를 초대한다. 우리 모두의 삶과 이야기들이 살아 숨 쉬는 마을이 펼쳐지게 되는 것이다 .
권종현 작가는 중앙대학교와 동대학원에서 서양화를 전공, 졸업했다. 오프닝 리셉션은 18일 오후 5시.
Out of discarded objects like spangles, scraps of cloth and paper, the artist Kwon, Jong-Hyun produces ,a collage work on canvas or on hemp. She combines, colors, cuts and puts these objects together on the picture surface.
These tiny objects are assembled together to create a sort of microcosm, calling back the memory of her childhood village where houses were stuck together on the slopes of hills. In her neighborhood, varying size and looks were built very closely to each other.
The artist re-creates a village of her own dream, a small utopia, although people are not affluent but are close to each other, sharing things and encouraging each other through out their ups and downs of lives. These pieces are put together by pasting or stitching to form a community of their own. The roofs, walls, and windows of the houses are replaced with scraps of cloth, corrugated paper, and PVC mirrors respectively.
Kwon's work can be interpreted as an extension of childhood plays and schoolroom art. Her work retains its purity and innocence, yet gives a poignant statement on the reality of contemporary society filled with isolation, displacement, indifference, and alienation.
By there warm and ingenuous works, the artist also expresses her yearning for the co-existence and harmony of people from a variety of walks of life, race, gender, social strata, and wealth.
