Ensemble 212, the acclaimed New York based collective of talented musicians, presents “Cultural Convergences: Inspired by the Land of the Morning Calm”, a bold, innovative program of all-new music influenced by the dance, poetry, and spirituality of Korea.

This unique concert will feature a world premiere concerto specially written for New York Philharmonic violinist Joo Young Oh by Composer in Residence James Ra. Mr. Ra is a 2nd generation Korean-American who is a Curtis graduate and highly in demand for new works from today’s top performers.

Featured on the haegeum, a two-stringed Korean fiddle, is Soo Yeon Lyuh, renowned for her masterful interpretations of new works written for her instrument. She is a pioneer in promoting the haegeum, having recently moved from Korea and commissioning numerous works for haegeum with Western instruments. Her original composition “Yessori” was recently performed with the Kronos Quartet. Ms. Lyuh will perform the New York premiere of two haegeum concertos written by University of Hawaii composers Donald Womack & Thomas Osborne. Cultural Convergences bridges the traditional and contemporary with Western and non-Western, a true reflection of our multicultural society.
