메트로폴리탄뮤지엄이 4월 14일 '잃어버린 왕국들: 남아시아 초기 5~8세기 힌두-불교 조각(Lost Kingdoms: Hindu-Buddhist Sculpture of Early Southeast Asia, 5th to 8th Century)전을 개막했다.

이 특별전은 지난 겨울(2013 11/4~2014 2/23) 400-800년 신라의 불교와 왕조 미술의 정수를 소개한 '황금의 나라, 신라’전(Silla: Korea’s Golden Kingdom)과 대조되는 전시다. 시기와 불교라는 소재가 유사하지만, 그 화려함에서는 황금의 나라-신라에 못미친다. 신라쇼가 황금빛이었다면, '잃어버린 왕국'전은 금을 사용하긴 했지만, 대부분이 돌, 청동, 은, 테라코타 등을 소재로 한 흑백쇼처럼 무채색조다.

그러나, 인도, 태국, 캄보디아, 버마, 싱가포르, 말레이시아, 베트남 등지의 불교 조각 160여점이 한 자리에 모였다는 점과 불교의 발상지인 인도에서 힌두교가 번성하면서 두 종교의 경쟁의식이 조각을 통해 발현됐다는 점이 흥미롭기도 하다.

'잃어버린 왕국'전은 메트뮤지엄이 파리의 아시아 미술 전문 박물관 기메 뮤지엄(Musée Guimet)을 비롯, 남아시아 각국의 국립 미술관들에서 대여한 작품으로 남아시아 초기 왕국들에서 제작됐던 조각을 탐구하는 첫번째 전시이자, 마지막 전시가 될지도 모른다.

영화 '시바의 여왕'의 시바, 할리우드 스타 우마 서먼의 '우마'와 제임스 카메론 감독의 '아바타', 인도 식당 '데비' 등의 기원을 찾아볼 수 있는 특별전이기도 하다.

뉴욕타임스의 비평가 홀랜드 코터는 이 전시에 대해 "당신은 무엇을 보던간에 열심히 보아야 한다. 당신은 이만한 스케일의 전시를 다시 볼 기회가 없을 것이다"라고 밝혔다.
