THE MORGAN LIBRARY & MUSEUM APPOINTS
JESSICA LUDWIG AS DEPUTY DIRECTOR

unnamedNew York, NY, January 23, 2017 — The Morgan Library & Museum today announced the appointment of Jessica Ludwig as its new Deputy Director.  In her position, Ms. Ludwig will oversee the Morgan’s facilities, visitor experience, and communications activities. She will also work closely with Director Colin B. Bailey to manage and support the museum’s curatorial, library, and research teams, and the development of the Morgan’s exhibition program.

Ms. Ludwig comes to the Morgan with more than sixteen years of experience leading complex exhibition, capital, and operational projects, primarily at New York’s Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts.

The Morgan Library & Museum is recognized as one of the world’s preeminent repositories of old master drawings, printed books, literary and historical manuscripts, medieval and Renaissance illuminated texts, music manuscripts, and ancient Near Eastern seals. It recently added collections of modern and contemporary drawings and photography to its holdings. The institution mounts more than a dozen major exhibitions each year and is noted for its outstanding scholarly and public programs, including a highly regarded series of classical concerts and performances. In April 2016, the Morgan celebrated the 10th anniversary of its award-winning 2006 expansion project by architect Renzo Piano.

In a series of increasingly senior positions at the Guggenheim, Ms. Ludwig managed six departments and the planning and execution of the New York museum’s multi-million dollar exhibition program. Among the many additional projects Ms. Ludwig oversaw was the BMW Guggenheim Lab, a collaboration with automaker BMW to construct, operate, and program temporary pavilions in New York and abroad. She was also involved in capital planning initiatives for collection storage and support facilities, and for the mounting of traveling exhibitions around the world.

From 2012 to 2015, Ms. Ludwig, as Director of ClarkNEXT and Design at the Clark Art Institute,  served as a member of the leadership team that was responsible for the museum’s 2014 expansion, including a new visitor and exhibition center designed by Tadao Ando and the renovation of the original museum building by Selldorf Architects. While there, she also managed the design department, the completion and launch of the Clark’s new website, and the execution of a site-specific installation by Thomas Schütte called Crystal on the Institute’s grounds.

“We are delighted to welcome Jessica to the Morgan,” said Colin B. Bailey. “She brings a wealth of programmatic and operational experience to the museum, having supervised large, complex projects involving cross-departmental coordination and implementation.  She has demonstrated outstanding ability to communicate the goals of these initiatives and build support among museum staff and management.  The Morgan is currently experiencing some of the most successful years in its history and Jessica’s expertise will be a key asset as the institution looks to extend these gains.”

Ms. Ludwig began her career as a graphic designer and letterpress printer and has received several awards for her work. She graduated summa cum laude in Visual and Environmental Studies from Harvard University with a special focus on printmaking.

“It is truly an honor to be offered the opportunity to serve as the Morgan’s Deputy Director,” Ms. Ludwig said. “The institution is one of New York’s treasures and one that has always been particularly important to me personally because of its curatorial focus on works on paper and the intimate encounters with many art forms that its exhibitions provide. I look forward to working with the staff and trustees as the museum continues to move its internationally recognized collections and programs in exciting new directions.”

Ms. Ludwig is expected to begin work at the Morgan on February 27.
