2013 핫도그 먹기 대회에서 소냐 토마스는 10분간 36 3/4개의 핫도그를 먹어 3연패 챔피온이 됐다. 

지난해의 45개에 비하면 떨어지는 수치다. 올 대회에서 2위의 줄리엣 리는 36개로 소냐 토마스에 육박했다. 
한편, 남성대회에선 조이 체스넛이 69개를 먹어 챔피온 타이틀을 유지했다.
올해의 남녀 챔피온 상금은 각각 1만 달러, 5천 달러로 알려졌다. (2013. 7. 4)

별명은 ‘블랙 위도우(The Black Widow), 본명은 소냐 토마스(Sonya Thomas), 한국이름 이선경.


키 5피트 5인치(165cm), 몸무게 98파운드(44.5kg). 작은 체구로 앉은 자리에서 굴 552개, 랍스터 44개, 교자 208개, 핫도그 45개를 꿀꺽 먹어 제끼는 여인.


소냐 토마스가 돌아온다.

독립기념일 코니아일랜드에서 열리는 네이탄 핫도그 먹기 여성 대회 2연패한 그녀가 3연패를 노린다.

2005년 독립기념일 12분만에 37개를 먹어치우며 미국 내 신기록을 세웠다. 


2011년 핫도그 먹기 여성대회에선 10분만에 40개를 먹어 챔피온이 됐다. 2012년 대회에선 45개로 자신의 기록을 깨면서 2연패했다.

토마스의 챔피온 타이틀은 무려 25개에 이르며, 핫도그, 조개, 굴, 소프트타코, 치킨텐더, 할라피뇨, 고추 등 세계 신기록 40여개 보유자다.


소냐 토마스는 1967년 군산에서 태어나 한국에서 호텔경영학을 전공한 후 1997년 미국으로 이주했다. 메릴랜드주 알렉산드리아에 정착, 버거킹의 매니저로 일하고 있다.


왜소한 체력으로 거구의 미국 남자들을 KO패 시켜온 소냐 토마스씨의 잘 먹는 비결은 무엇일까? 한국인의 빨리빨리 근성과 정신력일 것이다.

토마스는 2003년부터 먹기 대회 출전하면서 매일 2시간씩 트레드릴을 걸으면서 몸무게를 이전 135파운드에서 98파운드로 줄였다.


2004년 필라델피아에서 열린 닭날개(chicken wing) 먹기대회 ‘윙 보울(Wing Bowl)’에 첫 출전 167개를 먹으며 롱아일랜드 출신 부동산 중개인 에드 ‘쿠키’ 자비스와 전 챔피온 시몬스*를 누르고 첫 챔피온이 됐다. 부상은 자동차.

토마스는 자신보다 5배 거구의 남성들을 제압하면서 ‘블랙 위도우(수거미 잡아먹는 암거미, 독거미)’ 먹기대회 여왕으로 등극했다.

2005년 먹기대회 상금으로만 5만 달러를 벌었다. 


이후 2007-2011년 5연 연속 미 버팔로윙 페스티벌에서 챔피온이 됐다. 2011년 버팔로에서 열린 치킨윙 먹기 대회에선 12분간 183개를 먹어 우승했다. 이 기록은 이듬해 조이 체스넛이 191개를 먹으면서 깨지게 된다.

2008년엔 일본 출신 먹보왕 타케루 고바야시(Takeru Kobayashi)가 참가한 프룻케이크 먹기대회에서 우승을 차지했다.

고바야시를 이길 수 있는 방법은 8-10분 먹기대회라고, 고바야시는 20파운드를 먹을 수 있는 위장이 있기 때문.

▶훈련 방법: 


자그마한 체구에 조그만 위로 어떻게 빨리 많이 먹을 수 있을까? 소냐 토마스는 대회를 위해 평상시부터 훈련을 한다.


첫째, 식사는 아침과 점심을 거르고 저녁 한끼만 거하게 먹는다. 프렌치프라이, 치킨핑거, 그릴드치킨샌드위치 등. 대회 전날엔 샐러드만 먹는다. 


둘째, 하루에 2시간 동안 트레드밀에서 걷는다.


셋째, 정기적으로 무제한 뷔페(all-you-can-eat buffet)에서 실컷 먹는다.


넷째, 대회 전날엔 굶는다. 식욕을 최대한으로 하기 위해서.
